Researchers first isolated BPC-157 from a protein in human gastric juice — and if you’re not a scientist, you’re probably just as likely to be icked out by that as you are to find it fascinating.

You can buy some quality BPC-157 from our lab here.

Think about it, though. Most therapeutic peptides are super fragile. Not BPC-157 — basically the peptide equivalent of the brave support workers who keep Antarctica’s airstrips safe and functional. It survives and actually thrives in the most hostile of environments. (It doesn’t get much trickier than a bath of concentrated hydrochloric acid and digestive enzymes, does it?) Because nature evolves smartly, and something has to heal and maintain the gut’s delicate tissues with all that gastric juice swimming around.

When researchers first realized such a thing (such a “body protective compound”) had to exist, they hunted around for it in the hope that it could also heal other tissues. That’s BPC-157, and the starting hypothesis turned out to be correct. BPC-157 doesn’t only heal in the gut. Its protective action extends to tendons, ligaments, muscles, skin, nerves, and even the brain.

What it does is riveting. Faster healing. Better inflammation management. The ability to quickly cook up a support network of new blood vessels to make sure wounds and damaged areas get the nutrients, growth factors, and oxygen they need to recover. But researchers are also spell-bound by how BPC-157 gets that done. Most peptides work on one or a few receptors, but BPC-157 seems to be a “healing mothership.” Nobody quite knows exactly how it works yet. That’s exciting — because it means BPC-157 might well have applications beyond those already studied.

A (Very) Brief History of BPC-157

You don’t need to be a scientist to understand that, if gastric juices can “demolish” any of the foods we eat — including, for example, hearty steaks and pork rinds — it’s quite the miracle that they don’t also destroy the stomach itself. It’s even more surprising that the stomach heals itself from injuries and damage quite quickly.

Croatian researchers led by Dr Predrag Sikiric knew gastric juices had to have some sort of “maintenance crew,” and they were determined not to stop until they found it. They eventually succeeded, but the gastric tract’s natural “Body Protective Compound,” a larger protein, wasn’t quite ready to be researched as a potential healing treatment just yet. That took shortening the chain to keep the active sequence and ditch the rest. BPC-157 is the shorter, more manageable 15 amino acid chain born of this process — and the research team couldn’t be more excited.

Years after they succeeded in creating the compound, the team looked back and wrote: “The peptide was subsequently described as a cytoprotectant with the radical property of being stable in gastric juice and therefore accessible for both gastric and intestinal protection after oral administration.” [1]

That, they added, “is both provocative and amazing!”

It is, all the more so because BPC-157 doesn’t work through one pathway or receptor (like so many other peptides). It’s a body-wide “healing manager,” and now, thanks to the research team that developed it, it’s now available for the study of healing… pretty much anywhere in the body.

So, What Does BPC-157 Do?

BPC-157 heals. Not through one single mechanism or receptor, but by getting a “flurry of healing” that hits all stages of defense and recovery. The research overview you’ll get to right after explains what it’s been found to heal so far, but it really helps to know how this is possible.

Although it’s not fully clear how this peptide actually works, four main effects can be seen in healing studies:

BPC-157 makes damaged tissue extra sensitive to Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor and other growth factors. That’s how it so quickly builds a network of new blood vessels around “problem areas.”

It also regulates nitric oxide, which works together with all those new blood vessels — nitric oxide regulates blood flow and keeps the cells that line blood vessels healthy.

Another part of its healing action? BPC-157 gets fibroblasts — which make collagen — to report for duty in injured areas at record speeds. Injuries start healing faster because the repair system gets to work sooner.

BPC-157 doesn’t declare an all-out war on inflammation (some inflammation is actually necessary), but it does get inflammatory cytokines to chill out to let healing take over. And it does that without suppressing the whole immune system — which would create a risk of opportunistic infections.

Nearly every injury, anywhere in the body, benefits from that set of actions. It’s hardly surprising, then, that research points to a huge range of potential future use cases!

The Most Exciting Findings in BPC-157 Research So Far (and a Peek at What Could Be Next)

Every part of the body is different. The steps it takes to heal from stress, damage, or trauma are broadly the same everywhere, however, and BPC-157 makes those steps more efficient — and faster. It’s no surprise that studies have looked at a massive range of different injury models already.

Most exciting so far? We’ll take the findings one anatomical system at a time.

The Original Area of Research: BPC-157 for Gut Healing

Yes, the gut already naturally benefits from the parent protein from which BPC-157 was developed — but sometimes, the damage is so severe that extra help is needed. It’s only logical that the gut has been a big area of focus.

Studies have so far shown BPC-157 to speed up the healing of different kinds of ulcers — gastric, duodenal, and esophageal. These wounds close up faster, and the acid-induced damage often seen after ulcers is more limited with BPC-157. [2]

Even more promising? Inflammatory bowel diseases are lifelong. They need constant management, and patients’ lives can be interrupted by painful flare-ups at any time. BPC-157 fights inflammation. It protects the intestinal barrier, and helps the mucosal membranes heal from years of damage. [3]

The fistulas that can develop naturally or after surgery are another research target already explored in studies. BPC-157 boosts the odds that they’ll close up nicely and heal completely. [4]

Tendon, Ligament, and Bone Repair in BPC-157 Studies

This is the potential application most people know and love. BPC-157 has a massive “fan club” among researchers in athletics and biohacking, and preclinical data strongly back this research direction. [4]

Rats with severely injured Achilles tendons saw complete functional healing (with full tendon integrity) after they were treated with BPC-157. [5] Similarly exciting results were observed in medial collateral ligament injury models [6], muscle crush injuries [7], and bone fractures [8]. Faster healing is great — but more complete healing that ends in complete functional recovery is even more exciting. BPC-157 has demonstrated an uncanny ability to do both, including for the types of sports injuries that usually heal painfully slowly.

Research Into the Skin Healing Applications of BPC-157

Researchers who’ve studied how BPC-157 impacts the healing of skin wounds (surgical incisions, deep burns, diabetic ulcers, alkali burns) concluded that the “potency is evident,” and were quick to say the observed results “may be generalized to the other tissues healing.”

Some highlights? Skin grafts integrate better and have higher survival rates when models are given BPC-157. Diabetic ulcers, usually extremely difficult to heal, recover faster — and surgical incisions, which usually stay weak and vulnerable, have better “breaking strength.” [9]

Research conducted just in the last few years gives hope that the power of BPC-157 isn’t limited to the category of “wounds” or “injuries,” either. Chronic dermal disorders, including psoriasis (= systemic inflammation and an overactive immune response) are the next serious research targets. This area of investigation is just getting started, but the data are impressive so far. [10]

BPC-157 as a Protector of Internal Organs — Including the Brain

We’ve covered nearly every type of damage and injury already, but one final frontier remains. Some of the most exciting BPC-157 research zeroes in on internal organs — including the brain.

Models of traumatic brain injury and other central nervous system trauma hint that BPC-157 has such a strong protective effect that neuronal death rates go down and the odds of functional recovery improve. What’s more, BPC-157 actively seems to balance dopamine and serotonin, which shows the peptide might have mental health applications as well. [11]

Then, there’s potential in the fields of liver injury [12] and heart disease [13], logical when you know about the anti-inflammatory and blood vessel building effects of BPC-157.

Where Next?

With such obvious potential, research into BPC-157 could follow literally any direction — so long as it depends on healing. Orthopedic and sports medicine are still the most exciting fields, but chronic inflammatory conditions and neurology (starting with TBI and stroke) are just as promising.

How Is BPC-157 Usually Administered?

SubQ delivery is still the most common route of administration in studies that zoom in on the systemic effects of BPC-157. It’s reliable, 100 percent bioavailable, and convenient for researchers as well.

That’s not the only option, though. BPC-157 comes from gastric juices. It has to be super stable (able to survive the most hostile environments) to do its job in the wild. That puts new delivery methods on the table — BPC-157 doesn’t actually break down as an oral formulation, and oral BPC-157 is a viable option in studies that observe its effects on the gastrointestinal tract. Studies that look at ulcers and inflammatory bowel disease can opt for oral BPC-157.

Torn tendon or muscle studies might, on the other hand, focus more on localized effects. In this case, intramuscular delivery is another option. And for dermal studies? In the rodent models we already looked at, researchers applied BPC-157 in a saline solution directly to the skin.

How Do Researchers Calculate Dosing Protocols for BPC-157?

Carefully — and with a lot of qualified oversight. Any research team in the middle of designing a new BPC-157 can, however, learn a lot from the years of existing studies. This isn’t study design guidance or medical advice, mind you. Just information to satisfy your curiosity.

Rodent studies calculate dosing by weight, and BPC-157 has proven effective in small animals at doses between 10 mcg/kg and 50 mcg/kg. (Researchers sometimes add BPC-157 to rodents’ drinking water for easier administration, and a slightly higher dose can be used to build a “margin of error” barrier in this case.)

Biohacking researchers translate these doses, often (based on anecdotal reports) to:

250 to 500 mcg of BPC-157 daily for systemic or musculoskeletal research, sometimes split over two doses for more consistent levels in the body.

For oral protocols that study gut healing, 250 to 350 mcg a day.

Topically injected 500 mg doses for acute and localized tendon, joint, and muscle recovery research.

As always, researchers follow the principle of starting with a low initial BPC-157 dose that lets them see how the model responds and tolerates the peptide before moving up to the full target dose.

Biohacking circles also anecdotally discuss cycles that last between a month and six weeks — a time line that generally corresponds with soft tissue healing times. Designs that study chronic conditions tend to take longer.

FAQs

Does BPC-157 work immediately?

BPC-157 sends signals to inflammatory mechanisms and cells right away, and new blood vessel growth can also be observed pretty quickly — within 24 to 72 hours.
